From Apprentice to Training and Technical Support : Angus Erskine’s Journey at Scot JCB
When it comes to apprenticeships, there’s no better advocate than someone who’s been through the process and come out the other side with a rewarding career. Enter Angus Erskine, Scot JCB’s Training and Technical Support Advisor. Having started as an apprentice himself, Angus now plays a key role in shaping the next generation of engineers. His career journey is a testament to the opportunities that Scot JCB provides and the value of learning the ropes through hands-on experience.
From Apprentice to Trainer
Angus began his journey with Scot JCB as a 16-year-old apprentice. Over the years, he progressed from working as an engineer to gaining experience in sales before finding his true passion: mentoring and training apprentices and engineers. “I’ve been with Scot JCB for many years, and I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge,” Angus shared. “What I learned during my apprenticeship still sticks with me today—especially the importance of starting with the basics.”
This “back-to-basics” approach is at the heart of Angus’s training philosophy. Whether dealing with complex diagnostic tools or troubleshooting mechanical issues, he emphasises the importance of taking a step back and methodically working through the problem. “No matter how advanced the machines get, it’s often the simple things that make the difference,” Angus explained. “You can have all the tech in the world, but it comes down to understanding the fundamentals.”
The Apprentice Journey
The apprenticeship at Scot JCB is structured across four years, each building on the last to ensure apprentices gain confidence, skills, and independence.
- Year 1: Apprentices focus on learning the basics, both in college and on-site. They work alongside experienced engineers to understand fundamental systems like hydraulics and electrics while also developing vital life skills such as teamwork and customer interaction. A highlight of this year is the trip to the JCB factory.
- Year 2: Apprentices start to take on more responsibility, handling simpler tasks like pre-delivery inspections (PDIs) and basic services under supervision. This year is all about gaining hands-on experience and learning to take initiative ending with the “Skills Drill” with Angus.
- Year 3: In third year most Apprentices will be given the opportunity to attend jobs on their own and work independently out of their own van allowing them to hone their skills and learn more independence, monitored by their Supervisor.
- Year 4: Apprentices hone their skills further, balancing on-the-job learning with specialised manufacturer training. By the end of this year, they’re ready to qualify as full-fledged engineers, equipped with practical experience and a wide range of certifications.
“This structure ensures apprentices grow at their own pace while gradually taking on more responsibility,” Angus explained. “It’s all about preparing them for the real-world challenges they’ll face as engineers.”
Training Opportunities That Go Beyond the Basics
For apprentices at Scot JCB, the learning doesn’t stop at the core skills of the trade. The apprenticeship program is packed with opportunities to gain additional qualifications that set trainees apart.
“Our apprentices don’t just learn to be engineers—they gain extra certifications like forklift operation, air conditioning maintenance, and plant mover training,” Angus explained. These certifications not only broaden their skill set but also give them a competitive edge in the field.
One highlight of the program is the annual trip to the JCB factory in Staffordshire, a tradition Angus strongly supports. “Every first-year apprentice gets to visit the factory,” Angus said. “They get what we call their ‘yellow injection,’ which includes a tour of the world-class facilities where JCB machinery is built. From watching a Loadall take shape from a sheet of metal to seeing the world’s largest parts centre in action, it’s an unforgettable experience.”
The trip also includes opportunities to meet JCB experts, hear stories about the company’s history, and even enjoy a bit of team bonding over dinner and bowling. “It’s more than just a factory tour—it’s a chance to connect with the brand and get inspired,” Angus added.
Supporting Apprentices Every Step of the Way
Angus takes pride in supporting apprentices through their apprenticeship journey. “It’s not just about teaching technical skills; it’s about building confidence,” Angus explained. “Our apprentices aren’t thrown in at the deep end. They start with supervised tasks like services and pre-delivery inspections before gradually taking the lead on jobs.”
Angus is also quick to highlight the informal mentoring culture at Scot JCB. “Even though we don’t have an official buddy system, there’s always someone ready to take apprentices under their wing,” he said. “The relationship between an apprentice and their mentor is key—it’s about finding that balance of personalities and creating a supportive environment.”
A Rewarding Career
When asked about the most rewarding part of his job, Angus doesn’t hesitate. “It’s when an apprentice comes back and says, ‘What you taught me really helped out in the field.’ Knowing that I’ve passed on skills that make a difference—it doesn’t get better than that.”
For Angus, training is more than a job; it’s a way to give back to an industry he loves. “Apprenticeships at Scot JCB are full of opportunities,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to work on everything from cutting-edge diagnostics to troubleshooting JCB machines on remote Scottish islands. Now, I get to share that knowledge and help other people build their careers.”
Why Apprenticeships Matter
As the demand for skilled engineers grows, apprenticeships are more important than ever. For prospective apprentices—and their families—Scot JCB offers more than just a pathway to a job. It’s a chance to earn while you learn, gain life skills, and grow within a company that values its people.
“Scot JCB isn’t just a workplace; you’re not just a number here. The support and opportunities you get are second to none, “ added Angus.
For young people looking to kickstart their careers, Angus’s advice is simple: “What you put into it is what you get out of it. If you’re willing to learn, the possibilities are endless.”
